Sometimes the world needed to be solved by Italian food instead of superpowers. After all that had happened over the recent weeks, both Shadowcat and Spider-man needed to be Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker for a bit before their heads exploded. Jumanji, aliens, alien invasions, and explosions, it was basically just a game to see how much either of them could take before they finally snapped or broke down. And so Peter had proposed a date night (conveniently on his next payday), where for the whole of friday they were Not Talking About Hero Stuff. No masks, no costumes, no aliens, just a normal couple talking about all the normal stuff neither of them really seemed to do much anymore. Nothing more complicated than dinner reservations and valet parking - Peter had even worn a tie and borrowed his aunt's car for the evening to further prove that they were Normal tonight. No matter how much easier it would have been to web-sling (though while he'd resisted the urge to bring his mask, he'd still slipped his web shooters into his pockets out of pure paranoia)

Of course, given Peter's relative budget, Giuseppi's Fine Eatery was a step down from the class of the Baccarat hotel the X-Men had been staying at (and he'd definitely made sure to swing by the area on his night patrols). Classy, yes, but not the classiest. However, the tablecloths were a lovely shade of pink rather than white, a reprieve from the overbearing shade of "pearlescent" that the the hotel had. The kind of classy Italian restaurant that still wasn't afraid to put pizzas on the menu right next to all the fine pasta plates. Peter had resisted the urge to order that, and instead opted for a tortellini carbonara.

"Man, I forgot how good cream sauces are. I cook pasta stuff a lot, but I'm normally a red sauce kinda guy." He said, after sampling his entree with a smile. The same smile of being glad to just have a night off with the girl he loved, without aliens or mutant vigilantes or crime lords ruining everything.
Given Peter's luck, though, it was only a matter of time before a shoe dropped. One always did. There was a rule somewhere that no matter what the situation was, Peter Parker was not allowed to catch a break.

A day off!

While Peter took care of business at the Bugle that morning, Kitty spent it letting people rub diamonds on her. Literally. Officially, her 90-minute body treatment at the hotel’s Spa de La Mer used pure diamond powder, but still, rich people were bonkers. It did leave her skin looking gooood, though, so she couldn’t really argue with results. Mostly it was the massage, however, that finally soothed away some of that constant-of-late tension. Add to that a steaming hot shower (with the radio cranked to full), a complimentary hair blowout and free beauty products, and Kitty was finally feeling (and looking) better than she had in weeks.

By the time her date arrived in the early afternoon, Kitty had a bright and easy smile, not the least because Peter looking absolutely adorable all dressed to impress! The girl herself, meanwhile, wore the only dress she even owned any more (up from the whopping zero she’d had when he first offered the invitation). It was a pretty simple piece, admittedly, but with the way Peter kept looking at her? Again, she couldn’t really argue with results.

There was one change of plans from his original suggestion, however. He’d wanted to spend the day at the Museum of Natural History, but Kitty had quickly reminded him that if the goal was to forget their problems, then between the Savage Land and her last visit there, well... there were much better choices.

So, she’d simply appealed to the artist in him instead of the scientist, the MOMA instead of the AMNH. It even had the added bonus of being right next to the hotel, just a lazy walk away. The next few hours had been spent appreciating each other as much as any of the art on the walls. Hand in hand, snuggled close, stealing kisses at every opportunity.

By the time dinner arrived, those troubles were the farthest thing from her mind. Sure, the restaurant might have been a step down from the hotel, but it was also a step back into Kitty’s comfort zone. When they arrived, she’d taken a seat on Peter’s side of the booth, all the better to cuddle up with him. Only once the food arrived did she return to her own side, taking one last kiss before she did.

Not that the added distance stopped her from stealing any of his food. Her fork darted across the table to spear a few tortellini and try for herself. “Oooh, that is good,” Kitty purred. It was hard to go wrong with Italian, of course, but this was utterly delectable. “Try this, too!” She nudged forward her chicken pesto fusilli to try and tempt him with a bite in return.

“We need to do this for more than a day,” the girl insisted then. As tranquilizing as today had been, she didn’t want it to end. “What if we make it a weekend next? We could go to Vermont or Maine or even just upstate. Just the two of us.” Somewhere without supervillains and thus no need for superheroes. Somewhere without anyone asking anything of them. Somewhere they could be themselves, be alone.

“As soon as school’s out, I’ll have a lot more free time, too,” she promised. Xavier’s was never empty (so there was never a dull moment), but with at least some of the kids returned home for the summer, it would be easier to get away. “What about you? Finals got you swamped yet?”

A near by table suddenly erupted in a flurry of activity. The wait staff practically rushing the family of four that had been sitting there off the table. Actually, the families entire dining experience had been a rushed one from the moment they had sat down with the servers beginning the clear and clean the table as the family was trying to pay the bill. No one else in the restaurant was experiencing such a rushed service. Just this one table.

Soon enough, the reason for the hurry had walked into the front door. His tailored Fedora hat came off his head the moment he had walked into the restaurant. It was bad manners after all to wear a hat inside. His long Burberry trench coat slide off his shoulders and was handed to the hostess. An odd thing since this restaurant did not have coat check. He handed her his hat as well. The manager promptly telling the hostess to take the coat to his office and he would seat the man and his three companions.

Like something straight out of the 1920's. The Don of Dons Hammerhead stood at the front of the restaurant clad in a pinstriped suit. Behind him an to the left stood Michael Rothstein, consigliere to the Maggia crime family. Behind him where two of his capos Bruno and Michael Savitone.

The reason they called him Hammerhead plainly visible for everyone to see. The reason he was slippery visible as he walked towards his table. "Thank you, Don Joseph, for paying for my daughters neck surgery." An older man had said, taking a hold of Hammerhead's hand. Bruno and Michael made a move only to be stopped by Hammerhead's raised hand. "Fuggit about it..see. Howzethat shippin business of yours by the way. Doin good I hope." Hammerhead said with a wink before moving on down the aisle. Turning his head to look at the manager.

"Michael here's gotta nephew that needs a job...see. He'll come in on Tuesday to start." Hammerhead said with a gnarly looking smile given the profuse scars that littered that face of his. A face that had been caved in years ago by a pipe wrench. "Well we don't have any job openings.. sure. Tuesday. We'll be ready for him." The manager had stopped his retort after catching the look he had gotten from Hammerhead and remembering who it was he was speaking to.

"Good, ifnya could bring us a bottle of dat Chianti..see. I'd appreciate it." Don Hammerhead unbuttoned his pinstriped suit and seated himself at the table where the family had just been practically rushed out the door. Unfurled the napkin, sat it in his lap and turned the wine goblet right side up and grinned. Life was good for a mob boss who practically had New York's underworld organized crime scene by the gabagool.

"Ooh, wow, you're right." Peter said, after barely resisting the urge to talk with a mouthful of pasta and chicken. At the prospect of making it a weekend, he wanted to agree, but a part of him reminded him that while Peter Parker could do such a thing, "Spider-man" couldn't. Not right now, at least. Not with a potential threat of an alien invasion sequel and a certain Sicilian-accented scumbag running around New York's criminal underbelly. "I'd love to... but... yeah. Finals." Peter shook his head. "Getting close to it. I've engaged a plan of tactically scheduling all of my thesis papers, but..."

Nope. They were Not Talking About Work. "Graduating triple-major is busier than I expected. But I might still be able to make it work... but that involves things we aren't getting into--" And then it happened. As the servers frantically bailed a table of guests out the door, every hair on Peter's body stood on end. He didn't know why his Spider-sense had triggered for something like that, until he saw the man who followed. Immediately he looked back to Kitty, and then found his glass of water really interesting.

'No no no NO! COME ON! Are you freaking kidding me?!' He screamed in his mind, before pulling a pen out of his jacket and writing a note on his napkin. "Hangon, you got something on you." He said, though the hesitation in his voice was obvious. Kitty probably knew what his Spider-sense looked like by now. After feigning wiping her lip, he left the napkin next to her place. "There you go..."

The napkin read: "Don't look. That's Hammerhead."
It seems that the world simply could not handle the concept of giving Spider-man and Shadowcat a day off.

Kitty gave her man a look of soft sympathy as he outlined his scholarly woes. Getting her own degree had been hard enough just while finishing high school, and that was long before she’d committed to full-time superheroics. The girl was eager to assist, of course, in any way she could, but given how Peter trailed off, it sounded like that was a discussion for another time.

God help the nerd in her, though, but the phrase ‘triple major’ was irresistibly attractive.

But then he got that look, and with it came the sinking realization that date night might have just met its premature end. Kitty tried not to let her disappointment show, but, well, attempts to hide her emotions were often a mixed bag of success.

Instead, she just played along with Peter’s simple ruse. After one quick glance at the napkin, she subtly picked it up and slipped it in her purse, lest anyone else see. When her hand withdrew, it held her phone instead. With a quick swipe, she had the camera app open for a makeshift mirror. Going through the motions of checking her makeup gave an easy means of covertly checking over her shoulder -- at least for the moment.

And boy, it was a good thing Peter clarified, or she just might have mistaken this guy for the other old-timey gangster with a crushed-in skull. They were so easy to mix up.

Keeping one ear trained on the conversation behind her (which so far was hardly anything incriminating), she offered Peter a choice. As one finger twirled idly along the rim of her glass, she gave her date a flirtatious little smile. “So did you want to stay for desert?” she wondered. “Or go get it somewhere a little more private?”
