Yes.” Roberto levelled dopey brown eyes on his boyfriend’s own hazel ones, standing up on tiptoes to boop him lazily on the nose. “I’m drunk.” He added, swaying a little unsteadily on his feet as if to emphasise his point. He really did want to go to the party that evening, a bunch of old school friends would no doubt be there and he wanted to be able to walk into that room, smug smile on his face and the world’s sexiest man on his arm. He couldn’t do that and look fabulous if just standing up was rapidly becoming a challenge. “I think I drank too quickly.” Or too much but these felt like unimportant details. His words slurred so that combined with a fairly strong accent that he had never cared to bring closer to standard American, he was particularly difficult to understand but there was nothing that he could do to make them come out more clearly. If he was going to stand any chance of being at all fit for a party that night then he needed to go home and sleep off at least some of what he’d had to drink that day.

His brain a little slow on the uptake due entirely to his almost liquid diet, a frown crept over Roberto’s brow as he caught up to what Calvin had actually said. “Caramel cupcake. What? No. I’m not a dessert, Cally.” It wasn’t exactly an argument but in his addled state he couldn’t really think of a clear reason for objecting to his boyfriend’s pet name, only that he should. Resting the palm of his hand on Cal’s chest, he concentrated on not falling over backwards. Looking up at the much taller man had unbalanced him and he really was at risk of landing in a heap on the floor. “Not fancy, no.” He said, moving swiftly on to answering his boyfriend’s question. “You’ll be fine in something that you would normally wear.” Not everything that rich people did had to be fancy. A broad smile crossed his lips as Cal agreed to going to Lagoa that night. He couldn’t wait to introduce him to everyone. Squeezing the hand that took his, Roberto rested his head awkwardly on Mimic’s arm as they walked. It wasn’t ideal but he needed the support.

It was well over an hour before the pair made it back to the Costa Estate due in part to the crowds but also because a drunk Roberto was even more spontaneous than a sober one. He kept changing his mind about where they were headed, spotting something colourful or shiny and chasing after it like an excited puppy, and at least twice he completely forgot that they were even on their way home. By the time that they made it through the front door of the main building Calvin could have been forgiven for losing all of his patience. “Water.” Was the single word that left Roberto’s lips as he wobbled into the kitchen area. It wasn’t a demand but rather, by this point, about all that he could manage; he was tired on top of suffering with the amount of alcohol that he had to drink. Pouring himself a large glass, he took Cal’s hand with his free one and drew him into the master bedroom where he insisted that Mimic lay down with him.

The glass of water was left on the bedside table forgotten as the two men curled up together. “You know.” Beto mumbled into his boyfriend’s neck. “I can think of better things we could be doing than sleeping.” The words were barely comprehensible as he shifted on the mattress to kiss his boyfriend, somehow falling asleep mid move.

Aleixo, Yarah! E aí, tudo certo?!

Holding on tightly to Calvin’s hand, Roberto practically burst through the door of the penthouse of one of the richest men in Brazil. Aleixo Oliveira wasn’t technically a billionaire in his own right but everyone knew that he was set to inherit all of his father’s fifteen billion dollar fortune once the man had lived out his years, until then he was very well looked after. His wife, Yarah was a wealthy woman in her own right having sold her software company for eighteen million dollars when she was only twenty two. They had both been at school with Roberto before he had left for Xavier’s, Aleixo and he, in particular, had been part of a reasonably close knit group; friends for no other reason that their parents were disgustingly rich. Now that they were grown there still remained very little else that they had in common but it was enough to bring them together from time to time. Carnival was as good enough an excuse as any. Holding out his free arm to take Yarah first in a half embrace, he kissed her twice, on the right cheek and then on the left. For Aleixo he had a firm handshake.

The room was full of people, many with whom Roberto was acquainted but plenty who he had never laid eyes on before. Music played quietly in the background, enough to be heard over the chatter. Food was laid out, all kinds of traditional dishes alongside pizza, sliders and chicken wings, and a bar was set up in the corner serving all manner of drinks from cocktails to beers, wines and spirits. Amidst the crowd, smartly dressed security officers kept their eyes on the guests, their sharp suits meant that they stood out against the casual vibe that had been effortlessly created despite the expensive setting. Berto had, himself, dressed down for the occasion, as much as he could allow himself to for a public outing, in jeans and a crisp white shirt buttoned at the collar but rolled at the sleeves. A fitted black sweater was pulled over that; the benefit of no longer feeling the heat was that he was able to dress however he wished regardless of location or time of year. On his feet were a pair of R.M. Williams Chelsea boots and on his wrist a rose gold Drive de Cartier tourbillon watch.

I’m good, I’m good.” He answered his friends’ questions about his health in English as a way of making it known that the man that he was with was not a native speaker of Portuguese. “But enough about me, I want to introduce you to someone really special.” Each of them spoke English beautifully thanks to a private school education that delivered at least fifty percent but up to all of their classes in the language. “Alex, Yarah. This is my boyfriend, Calvin.” He said proudly, “Cal, Alexei and Yarah are friends from school.” They were off to a good start; the party hosts were two of the most accepting people that Roberto knew and both of them greeted the news that Roberto was in a committed relationship with delight and enthusiasm before making their apologies and leaving to greet more newcomers. With a wide smile, Berto turned to Cal. “Let’s get some drinks.” He demanded seemingly forgetting that only a few hours ago he had been steaming drunk. He still wasn’t exactly what could be argued as sober but that at least meant he didn’t have a hangover.

“<Roberto da Costa, as I live and breathe.>” As the two men made their way over to the bar a rather severe looking woman in a dress that was far too expensive for her indelicate frame sashayed over, a hand sporting meticulously painted nails held out for Sunspot to take. Berto’s expression dropped as brown eyes fell on her approaching and for a second he looked for a way to avoid their falling into one another’s paths but it was hopeless. “Maria. It’s been a long time.” He sighed, taking the woman’s hand but doing nothing with it before drawing back. Switching to English Maria Sousa turned her attention on Mimic, judgemental eyes sliding up and down his tall frame. “And who is this?” She asked dismissively; it wasn’t clear if she was really interested. “Don’t tell me things have gotten so bad that you’re now resorting to bringing The Help as your date.”

There was a slight knot in Calvin's stomach as he followed Sunspot through the door leading into Aleixo Oliveira's penthouse. That they were attending a party hosted by one of the richest men in Brazil seemed like a plausible cause for how he felt, but that wasn't it. Despite his comparatively humble roots, Calvin was no stranger to events of this nature. Between his departure from Xavier's and his captivity in Bluffdale, he had been at comparable parties often enough. Often as the plus one for someone who appreciated having someone young, attractive and charming on their arm, but almost as frequently just to sink his hooks into someone whose loneliness and wealth he could turn to his advantage. Calvin knew how to conduct himself at an event like this pretty well, that wasn't an issue. It was the fact that this was the first time he was out in public at a gathering like this, one where they wouldn't disappear into a sea of people. It wasn't a bad feeling though. Just as much as nerves played a part in creating the knot in his stomach, so did excitement. Calvin was thrilled to be seen at the side of the man he loved, and carried himself with pride as he followed alongside Berto towards this evening's hosts.

Calvin gave Beto as much space as he could to greet his friends, limited as he was in the distance he could keep with his hand still held firmly in his boyfriend's. His attention wandered ever so briefly when Beto's friends initially addressed him in Portuguese, drawn towards taking in some of the other guests present at Aleixo's party, then towards the generous and diverse selection of food their hosts had made available. With enhanced senses like Calvin's, it was difficult not to take note of the pleasant blend of aromas coming from the various local delicacies and other culinary offerings. A mental note was made to try at least some of the local dishes that he wasn't familiar with yet. Cal had an appreciation for well-made food, and was always keen on trying something new.

The switch to English quickly brought Calvin's focus back to Roberto and the two hosts, his chest possibly puffing out just a little bit at being referred to as someone really special by his boyfriend. Calvin offered their hosts a friendly smile, shaking both their hands in turn with the one not claimed by Roberto. "It's a pleasure to meet you both," he told them, cutting himself short before he said something cliché or silly sounding like "You have a lovely home" or "Thank you for your hospitality." Both Aleixo and Yarah seemed very welcoming, and the excitement they expressed for their friend being in a steady relationship with him made it even easier for Calvin to warm up to them. So far, the evening was off to a great start.

And then it took a sharp downward turn.

It was immediately obvious to Cal that his boyfriend was not happy to see the woman who approached them as they made their way towards the bar, even before his unenthused greeting. It was inevitable that they would run into someone whom Berto was less than fond of, but Maria Sousa seemed like a particularly unpleasant woman. Just the way she regarded him was enough to make Calvin just want to tug on his boyfriend's arm and lead them away from her, but Maria spoke up before he actually did so. "The help," Calvin echoed incredulously at the woman's assessment of him. His expressive eyebrows quirked up ever so slightly as he regarded her in an unimpressed manner. "Of course," he added flatly, "I'm only going out with him because he's paying me for it. I'm basically a high class escort." Calvin bit back on adding "You absolute dipstick", but his tone more or less implied it.

Not wanting to cause a scene, at least not this soon after arriving, Calvin simply turned his attention away from the austere looking Maria and towards his boyfriend. Bringing his free hand up to Beto's chin, he gently drew his boyfriend's attention towards him by turning his head slightly and leaned in for a kiss. "Let's get those drinks you mentioned, bonito," he smiled at him. "I would like a Caipirinha, and I'm sure Maria has more important things to do than busy herself with rabble like me. Like finding herself a date for tonight. Perhaps you could give her some tips on where she can get her money's worth?" Calvin kept his attention focused on his boyfriend as he spoke, as if Maria wasn't standing right there. She didn't strike Calvin as the type who liked to be ignored, which was exactly why he took such pleasure in doing just that. Without sparing another word or look for Maria, Calvin continued on towards the bar then, leading his boyfriend along with him. He did not care to be spoken down to by some stuck-up bitch with more money than sense, especially not some unpleasant looking human, so he wasn't planning on waiting around for her to open up her mouth again for something else vexatious to roll off her tongue.

Brown eyes went wide as Maria asked her question. Oh hell no, she could just back her fat ass right back up and off of the balcony; no one spoke to Roberto’s boyfriend that way. He wouldn’t have tolerated it even if he had invited a member of his staff but it was just one hundred times worse hearing the woman’s attempts to degrade the man that he loved. He made to snap some sassy retort back at the stupid witch but was stopped short when Calvin got there first, stunning him into silence. Well, that was certainly one way to shut Maria Sousa up. His jaw almost hit the floor as Cal asserted that he was not ‘the help’ but a high class escort instead but quickly curled into an amused smile. He had no time to add any retort of his own before a kiss was planted on his lips and his boyfriend was making a request for drinks. Roberto da Costa had been rendered speechless, the impossible had been achieved. Honestly, he wasn’t even one hundred percent sure what had just happened but he was willing to accept that it had and move on.

Maria Sousa on the other hand merely looked perplexed and definitely disappointed that her prey had not taken the bait. Following Calvin towards the bar, Roberto turned just before they were out of earshot and smiled ineffectually at the woman. “What a lovely dress you’ve squeezed yourself into, Mari. Last season’s Valentino if I’m not mistaken?” If you were going to insult the super rich it was often best to do so by implying they had fallen on hard times. “No wait, that’s a Spring/Summer 2015 isn’t it? You know, I didn’t think they made them in your size. Good for you.” Or suggesting that they’d put on a little weight, Roberto spared no sympathy and went for the combined approach. He was unable to stick around for her reply given that Calvin had hold of his hand still and was leading him towards the bar with considerable determination. He didn’t mind, it was enough just knowing that both of their responses would have left Maria Sousa with burning cheeks.

Picking up the pace so that he was no longer being towed but was instead walking in line with Cal, Roberto tugged on his arm to grab the other man’s attention. A concerned frown had creased his brow. “Querido, I’m sorry about that.” He sighed, he hadn’t meant for their first encounter following meeting the hosts to go over so badly. Unfortunately there was a lot of that at society parties; everyone was always competing to be the best. Plenty kept their personal competitions to themselves, others couldn’t help but draw attention to the faults of their fellow attendees or resort to shaming in order to feel better. “I would have just told her that you were my boyfriend and demanded she shut her fat, ugly mouth. I honestly don’t know why anyone invites her to these things.” Except for the fact that her mother Regina was a prominent federal politician who had contacts and influence across the business sector. Roberto was fairly sure he’d rather see his business fail than have to pander to that woman’s awful daughter.

She’s sore because I wouldn’t date her. Refused rather emphatically actually.” She was particularly unpleasant to most everyone but Roberto occupied a special place in her heart. It didn’t seem to reassure her that he hadn’t even been the dating type at the time that she had suggested to him that their pairing could be mutually beneficial. He shuddered, “I think she took it personally because, well, I have a reputation for not really turning an offer down.” He chuckled nervously at that, it was far from a secret that Roberto had enjoyed the company of, well, most anyone once upon a time but he didn’t like what it implied about his being with Calvin. Namely that he wasn’t being picky there either. Finally reaching the bar, Beto ordered a Caipirinha for Cal and a Batida for himself. He was suddenly not in the least bit enthusiastic about being at the party at all. Why couldn’t it have gotten off to a better start than Maria Sousa and her out of season Valentino?

A high class escort, huh? So what’s your fee?” He said playfully, nudging his love with his shoulder. “Because I can pay you for tonight in snuggles on the couch and admitting when I am wrong on at least one occasion.” Taking Cal’s hand he kissed the back of it and smiled before turning to take his drink from the bar. Just as he was about to suggest that they go and see what food Aleixo and Yarah had laid out for them, he heard his name being enthusiastically called across the room. Looking up to see where it was coming from, a wide smile reached right up to his eyes as he was met with an old friend. “Matthew!” He almost cheered, throwing his arms wide to greet the other man with a warm hug. Matthew was taller than he at around six feet, with blond hair and startlingly blue eyes. His naturally pale complexion was just kissed by the sun and he had a smattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks. He was far more casually dressed than most at the party in a plain white t-shirt, black jeans and sneakers. “My God Matthew, it’s been a while man, how are you?

When he replied, it was evident that this friend was not Brazilian and, in fact, British. His well to do southern accent with its elongated vowels stood out amongst the clipped Portuguese voices that rang out around the room. “Calvin, this is Matthew Goodwin, he was at school with me before I moved to the US.” Roberto turned to his love, gesturing towards him by way of introduction. “Matthew this is my boyfriend, Cal.” Matthew held out a hand for Calvin to shake and smiled; there was a kindness in his eyes that had been missing with Maria Sousa. “Great to meet you, Calvin.” He said, his shake firm and his tone assertive. “Berto and I used to play football together.” He added, “Was right there when he manifested. Thought it was crazy at the time. Three years later and the same happened to me. Small world.” There had been three of them at school together who, it had been discovered, shared the X-Gene in common; Matthew Goodwin, Hugo Santos and Roberto. Whilst he had been gone when the other two had manifested, the boys had remained in contact over the years. “So we know each other from school. Cal, how did you meet our boy here?” He asked with another smile waiting for his answer before turning to Roberto to ask.

“So what’s up with Hugo? He’s here tonight but he’s refusing to come over and say hi.” Matthew asked.

While he had no intention of entertaining Maria any longer, Calvin had no issue with slowing his pace enough for his love to sass the woman before continuing on his way towards the bar, where he met his love's gaze with an amused twinkle in his eye. He wasn't all that bothered by what Maria had said, because to care he needed to value her opinion and she'd made sure he wouldn't the instant she had hauled herself in their direction. "It's okay," he assured his boyfriend with a smile. "I was tempted to sass her about the dress too, but then I decided I was already done with her." He was there to enjoy an evening with Roberto, not to be around someone like Maria acting like she was better than him simply because she'd lucked into money somehow.

"Oh, I can't fault you for that," Cal chuckled when Roberto told him he'd refused to date Maria. He could understand it perfectly, even, and was happier for it. Calvin knew he wasn't Roberto's first, far, far from it actually, but none of that was off putting like the thought of him dating Maria would have been. When Berto went on to mention why Maria had taken the rejection especially badly, Calvin's smile widened. "I remember what that was like," he remarked amusedly, thinking back to the night they had first met. Technically Calvin hadn't made an offer then, at least not for what they ended up engaging in, but boy had Roberto ever jumped at the chance to sleep with him. It had been a most tumultuous start to what had ended up being the one thing Cal had grown more devoted to than anything before. "I'll tell you this," Cal added, "that's a reputation I'm more than happy to ruin entirely." If it were up to him, everyone would know sooner rather than later that Roberto da Costa was no longer accepting any offers after finding one that just kept him coming back for more.

Berto brought up his high class escort comment then, causing Cal to raise his eyebrows at him. There were stories he could tell his boyfriend about that time of his life, but since Beto was only teasing Cal decided to respond in kind. "I'll do you pro bono," he smirked at his boyfriend, taking the Caipirinha from him. "Saúde," he said as he raised his glass briefly, then brought it to his lips to take a sip of the cocktail. He turned mid-sip as someone called out Roberto's name from across the room, watching a far more pleasant looking individual than Maria Sousa quickly make his way over in their direction. Matthew, apparently, who unlike most of the guests at Aleixo and Yarah's party was a mutant like they were. Calvin had picked up on that little fact the second he turned his attention in the man's direction.

The two men greeted each other briefly, then as before with Beto's other friends it was time for Calvin to be introduced. Calvin offered the man a smile as he shook his hand, nodding in response to the far more pleasant, amicable way Matthew addressed him than Maria had. "It's always nice to meet one of Roberto's old friends," he told the man. "Especially another mutant." It was no secret to Roberto that Calvin had more than just a little bias towards mutantkind, so immediately hinting at being a mutant himself would come as no surprise. "Roberto and I actually met at school as well," he went on to explain, "many years ago, in America." They had never interacted much, but that had been the first time Calvin had mimicked Sunspot's mutation, so it held at least some significance to him. "We lost sight of each other for many years, until we ran into each other at a bar last month, and well--" Calvin briefly gestured between Roberto and himself, "--we clicked." There was far more to that story than just that, but Calvin was sure that Matthew didn't need to know about all that.

Or perhaps he did.

The glass in Calvin's hand shattered at the unexpected mention of Hugo's name, several shards of glass digging into the palm of his hand. Hearing the name of the man who had thrown his love's life into such disarray, whose foolishness had almost lead to his complete ruin, caused such a sudden surge of anger in Calvin that he'd briefly lost control of his strength. "Fuck," he muttered quietly, more annoyed at the fact that some of his drink had spilled onto his pant leg than the fact that there was glass sticking out of his hand. "I'm fine," he assured Beto and his friend, zipping over to the closest napkin holder on the bar and back in the blink of an eye and quickly removing the glass from his hand so his healing factor could more easily deal with the wounds. "See?" Calvin held his hand up for Matthew to see, the cuts in his hand already healed. "Sorry, I was just--" Calvin started to explain, but quickly cut himself off as his eyes shifted to meet Roberto's. He could tell Matthew what had happened, but this was not his story to tell, and if his boyfriend didn't want to share what Hugo was responsible for then he could either make up some excuse or Calvin would do so himself.

Hugo Santos had been two years above Roberto at school. A young Betinho da Costa had admired the boy’s confidence, his way with people, and had made every effort to emulate it. They had become friends despite a gap in age that, during teenage years, might as well have been decades, for the most part because both of their families were ridiculously wealthy even compared to the other rich members of their cohort. When Roberto’s mutant powers manifested and he moved away to the US, Hugo had kept in touch, excitedly informing him when his own mutation had developed. They had been as close as two people who lived thousands of miles apart could be. Roberto had trusted Hugo until the man had abused that trust by taking things too far. It was because of Santos that he had taken the Kick; yes it had been Roberto’s decision to do so, yes he had taken it over two weeks after his former friend had given it to him and for all of those reasons what he had done could never be anyone’s fault but his own. But he would have never touched the power enhancing drug if the man pretending to be his friend had not assured him that it was safe, harmless.

Only a little over a month ago on the night that had changed the course of his life forever, left him feeling so beside himself with guilt, regret and sorrow that he had been willing to die, he had paid a visit to his former friend at his apartment in Manhattan. There he had found Hugo, half naked in bed, showing off his boosted powers to two women; the Kick hadn’t affected him like it had Sunspot. His unexpected arrival and intimidating appearance when his powers were active was enough to scare off the other man’s company and when they had finally gone Roberto had beat Hugo until he had begged him to stop. He had rationalised the attack at the time with the notion that whatever had remained of the drug in his system had driven him to a more violent reaction than he was otherwise. But at Matthew’s mention of his name he knew right then that it had been nothing more than anger that had caused him to act out with such brutality. Life was great, just a few short weeks on and he had begun to feel as though he could pull himself together, that things would eventually be better. But even without laying eyes on him, just knowing that Hugo was there was enough to cause a spiral.

The shattering of Calvin’s glass shocked Roberto out of his sudden trip into recent memory and he turned with surprise to look at his boyfriend. Despite his concern he didn’t move to help Cal; he was used to his healing factor dealing with things like this although typically he might have checked if he was in any significant pain. “Jesus, man, are you okay?” Matthew stepped forward to offer his assistance but Mimic had already zipped over to the table and back, glass removed from his hand, healing already taking place before the Brit could do very much to help. Roberto’s expression was dark, brown eyes scanned the immediate crowd in search of Hugo Santos. He didn’t even hear Calvin speak, didn’t consider that perhaps Matt might want an explanation. “Where is he, querido?” He asked, quietly, knowing full well that Cal would be able to find the other man no problem. He could have asked his friend, it was clear that Matthew had seen Hugo that evening, but despite his anger Roberto really wasn’t prepared to put him in such an awkward position. “Never mind, I see him.

Lurking in a corner, conspicuous in the way that he surrounded himself with beautiful but gaudy women, Hugo was completely unaware that Roberto had laid eyes on him. Did he think he was invisible, peacocking around his small group of admirers like he was somebody? Clenching his fists at his sides, Roberto really tried for a good minute to keep himself in check. Cal had brought him to Rio to cheer him up, they had been having a good time, they had come to the party that evening because he was proud of his new boyfriend and had wanted to show him off. If he approached Hugo now then he was going to ruin that, the memory of their trip would forever be tainted with angry feelings. But even on a good day Beto found it difficult to control his temper, he wasn’t a typically violent man but he could lose himself to irrationality in a heartbeat. Unable to hold it back any longer, he shoved his drink roughly at one of the other men, not checking to see if they had taken it from him before walking away from Matthew and Calvin without so much as a word. Transfixed on the area of the room where the object of his fury stood, he headed with single minded focus towards the little crowd that had formed around Hugo Santos.

Pushing past people who refused to get out of his way, Roberto neglected any apologies that he might normally have given for spilled drinks and bruised egos. When he finally reached Hugo’s mini harem of hangerson he roughly pulled two girls aside, ignoring their squeals of complaint as, quickly he had the other man pressed up against the wall. The palm of his hand rested on Hugo’s lapel, to the casual observer their encounter would not have been any cause for alarm. It took every ounce of Roberto’s restraint not to put his fist straight through the man’s face right there but instead he offered him a smile that did not touch his eyes, anger flickering brightly within them. “I told you never to come near me.” He said through gritted teeth, his voice low so as not to disturb the rest of the party. “And yet here you are.” Taking hold of the man’s jacket, he opened it and reached inside to dip a hand into the inside pocket. His expression flattened when his fingers met the plastic bag that sat within and he pulled it out, pushing it against Hugo’s chest. “What the Hell is this?” He spat. “You better have a good fucking explanation Hugo, or I’m going to kill you right here.
