Before September, 2016

Discovering his mutant powers long ago and theorizing that mutation was a possible step in human evolution, Professor Charles Xavier spent years searching for others like him. The man did what he could to teach and guide those under his care into being productive members of a society he hoped would one day accept them. Eventually he decided to settle down on his family estate and establish the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters. In one stroke of philanthropy, Xavier created a place where mutants could live in peace and learn to control their mutations without fear of persecution.

Despite this good work, Charles knew that the laws of averages meant at some point there would be mutants who viewed their powers as a birthright to use on whomever for whatever purpose they wanted. Seeing the danger mutants and humans were facing in this new world, and being without an iconic symbol to look up to, Professor Charles Xavier assembled his first class, named his the X-men, and gave them a solemn duty. Protect and build a world where all Earth's children, both mutant and human, might live together in peace.

"A new generation of mutants is emerging, that much is certain. They will be called freaks. Genetic monstrosities. [...] But they are emerging in the inner cities, in the suburbs, in the deserts and the jungles. And when they emerge, they will need teachers, people who can help them overcome their anger and show them how to use their strange gifts responsibly. They will need us." --Charles Xavier

Xavier opened his doors to five young mutants in September of 1997, but he was not the only mutant reaching out to the younger generation. Another discovered his abilities years ago, as well. Erik Lehnsherr: the man who would become Magneto. Having seen the cruelty of humanity, Magneto saw an inevitable conflict between the species. The likelihood of a peaceful transition between the old and the new was a rarity historically and Lehnsherr set out to make sure mutants were the species that would win the impending clash of the species.

March 8th, 2001 Magneto single handedly targeted and took over Cape Citadel Missile Base in Florida, blowing the lid off of the mutant secret. Before that moment, the Children of the Atom were not publicly known outside of a few secretive groups such as Weapon X and their forceful introduction into the limelight was the stuff of nightmares. Millions watched Magneto as his control over magnetism allowed him to devastate an army with targeted EMP bursts, metal manipulation, and electromagnetic force fields. He held an entire army at bay with a show of force that threatened humanity with the very weapons the base had to protect them.

Magneto's actions spurred Xavier into action. Reluctantly he sent his original class of five X-Men set to stop the Master of Magnetism and protect the people of Earth being threatened. Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman managed to drive Magneto off. He was not expecting such organized super-powered resistance but he was only temporarily beaten. Magneto's message had been broadcast loud and clear and there were plenty of men and women who listened.

While his dear friend Charles Xavier set out to find mutants who could bring about peaceful coexistence, Magneto set out to find mutants willing to push the world into war. Fueled by the rising animosity between humankind and mutants, Magneto gathered his Brotherhood of Mutants and set them loose on the world.

"If you know who I am, then you know what I am capable of... the actions I am willing to take to protect my people. And you know why I have come." --Magneto

There have been confrontations and skirmishes in the decade and a half since then. Both Xavier and Magneto have assembled forces, sometimes battling and sometimes working together against mutual threats. The publicity of the Brotherhood and the X-Men has lead to divided opinions from humanity. The X-Men are alternately seen as heroes, vigilantes, and possible threats. There has been a swelling of anti-mutant sentiment in the political arena, but this has been too slow for certain alt-right "humans first" groups such as the Friends of Humanity and the Purifiers.

It is this world on edge that needs your characters. Will they be a hero and strive to protect others? Will they be a villain or freedom fighter, attempting to bring down human civilization? Or will they simply want to keep their head down and do their own thing, hoping this all blows over and cooler heads prevail? Only you can decide.

Welcome to the Marvel Evolution.
