As the pair crashed into the fridge, Kitty didn’t know whether to thank whatever idiot had dragged it out into the middle of the room or to take him for the same ride. On the one hand, she’d meant to cause Nona pain, and to that end, it had aided beautifully. The woman’s teeth knocked in, and the sound as her bones cracked broke the air before the fridge itself crashed onto its side. But at the same time, that rough landing meant Kitty wasn’t walking away injury-free either; she was at least walking away with a limp.

But she ignored Nona for a moment; that hobbled hag wasn’t going anywhere, despite her struggled efforts. For now, there was a more pressing concern. Someone had gotten the drop on the team. They had an active shooter behind their lines, and she was clearly doing damage. Luckily, the bullets meant for Nez either missed their mark or made little difference. Cess bravely jumped in to protect Ash; Kitty wasn’t sure if the girl’s altered physiology would keep her safe, but at least with their healer unharmed, he could undo the damage.

Kaylee, though, had definitely been hit. It sent a spike of fear through Kitty’s heart before the girl resumed her rampage. In no short order, Kaylee had dealt with their assailant. Not even getting shot would stop that Southern spirit.

With all three members of Kerr’s shitty, shitty family down for the count, any members of their crew still capable of fighting no longer had the will. And with the fight seemingly over, it looked like things were finally turning up. But the rest of the team saw something she didn’t.

All Kitty saw was the fear in their eyes.

The girl turned just in time to be sprayed with her friend’s blood.

It took a moment for everything to sink in. It had all happened so fast, and for all the evil she’d seen in the world, her mind still couldn’t quite grasp that anyone would be so heartless as to do such a thing to their own child.

The rest of the team was quicker to react. In no time at all, the wind snatched away that boxcutter to bury it in the wall. That loathsome woman was pinned to the ground by one giant, while another tended to her precious daughter. Logan and Lacey were quick behind, and Kitty gave a quick nod to her orders.

But while everyone worked on Kerr, they had another blonde friend still bleeding. Kitty limped to the other room where Mistral had dropped. “C’mon,” she instructed Cess. “Help me move her to the kitchen.” Ash was too busy to move himself, so it was best to get both patients in reach at once. “Hang in there, Kay. You did good.”

With Mercury’s help, they got Mistral close enough for their healer to work his magic, and then Kitty ducked out the side of the building. “Arsenic,” she spoke over the comm, “can you drive the van up to the side here? We’re coming out through the wall. And Cypher, is our exit clear?” By now, he should have had time to wipe any surveillance and to track any police presence in the area. If not, Kitty would have to give him a hand herself.

With that, Shadowcat stepped back inside and gave a sharp whistle. “Let’s go!” she barked. With one hand flat on the wall, she could let them all step through it with ease to the waiting van. Once all the kids (and the dino) were clear, soon Wolverine was the only one left.

“Logan…” With as long as the two had worked together, he surely knew what she was going to say next -- just like she knew there was no talking him out of it. So the girl just left it at that, giving him just one troubled look before she left the building herself.

But even that unspoken plea for leniency wasn't for Nona's sake. It was for his own.

Glancing at Arsenic kicking James, Doug said "He's probably down for another five minutes at least. And if he doesn't run when it wears off, I can always stun him again." Getting into the van, he heard Shadowcat and pulled up the display of where some of the programs he had running were working on erasing electronic evidence and diverting law enforcement.

"Things seem to be working fine on this end," Cypher said. "We had an unexpected guest, but he is busy drooling on the sidewalk instead of shooting me again." Looking in the mirror at James, Doug had his pistol out and ready just in case.

Trembling at the thought of Backup being dead, he had a surge of hope at the sight of Honeybear working on her. Cypher was unsure what he would do if she was dead. But he knew that Nona would not survive it.

And he could set it all up from his home. Simply altering records. Making false warrants. Laying a trail where she was a leak for various organized crime groups. Where they would want their pound of flesh from her. And notifying them of where she was. The sort of groups where if you were a guy and were lucky, they would castrate you with a pair of pliers.

The thought of leaving Nona to their tender mercies flitted across his mind, as even if she did somehow seduce her way into the good graces of those in charge, he could then alter things where that crime syndicate was funding terrorism. Whereby Nona would be caught and waterboarded for information.

But he got behind the wheel and loaded Indy back up, pulling closer to the house so everyone could get in easy.

Nez looked down and smiled at Nona. Whose defiance was nothing more than world class ignorance. It baffled him how these sorts of people could be so utterly clueless. How they thought that staying defiant in the face of a crushing defeat was some sort of win on their part. It was not. It was simply sad. The only thing Nona accomplished this day was to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she had forfeited her right to call herself mother or human for that matter. She had also proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Kerr did in fact have a family. One that would drop everything at the first sign of trouble and come to her aid. Like a true family would. "I'm really quite terrible at this being scary thing. It's just not in my nature. That's why he says I'm a neophyte. It means new by the way." Nezhno said, in case Nona's ignorance extended to words with three syllables. Logan knew that no matter how much Nezhno wanted to in this moment, he would never be able to carry out his threat.

Nezhno may be new, and may have a heart that stops him from delivering a blow that takes a life, but what Nezhno was not was clueless or naive to the reality that was heating on the stove. Unless beer came in tea bags, Logan was not fixing himself a spot of tea. Nezhno said as he held the to stupid to understand Nona to the ground with one hand while he reached out to console Old Lace with the other. "Go check on Arsenic. So we can head out." Nezhno said to the raptor. Shadowcat was correct. They needed to be going, and Nezhno knew what was coming for him. The sooner he could get to the van the better.

"I am sure their will be more to take their place. It is the nature of the world." He simply said while lifting Nona up like a rag doll and patting her down for any concealed weapons. "That simply means,
our work doesn't end with you."
Nezhno laid Nona down at Logan's feet. No longer concerned with her escape. As close as she was to Logan and as fast as he was, merely thinking the word escape would be greatly unfortunate for her.

Nezhno glanced up and looked Logan in the eye. Two sets of eyes that sat on the opposite sides of the spectrum. Nezhno knew two things. He knew he did not like, and was not comfortable with what he could only imagine was coming for Nona. He also knew that Bast was not only the Panther God. A God of poetry, music, and dance, but Bast was also the War God. Taking Kerr was an act of war. Nona's fate was sealed from that moment and attempting to murder her own daughter only served to settle the question what to do with Nona. The only question left, what to do with the rest of Nona's network? The ones not here. Nezhno was pretty sure Doug would have suggestions. The long arm of the outlaw was about to learn that the mutant arm was longer.

Rising to his feet and releasing Nona to Logan's "care," Nezhno turned towards the wall that Shadowcat eluded to and effortlessly shoved his way through. He could feel the exhaustion coming though he focused on making sure everyone got out safely.

As silver eyes scanned Mistral ‘s bullet riddled body, it became immediately apparent that Kaylee was making light of the extent of her injuries. This wasn’t the type of graze that one could just walk away from. She was bleeding profusely, and thankfully for everyone Kitty had caught a glimpse of Cessily’s panicked expression and came over to help. Shouldering her half of Kaylee’s weight, the pair worked to half escort, half carry her toward Ash so that he might work his blue-goo magic. In an effort to keep her eyes off the scene of carnage that she was walking toward, Cess cast a glance toward Shadowcat. The woman was a damn ninja, cool as a cucumber in the face of adversity and sheer, focussed determination in her eyes. Cessily could only aspire to be on that level some day. #Goals.

Lowering Kaylee to the ground next to Honeybear, she stepped back to give him space to work, and out of necessity turned away from the gory scene. Silver lips pressed into a thin line, shoulders rising and falling with deep breaths meant to assist in keeping her cool. It would all be okay, when they were back home at the school and things were back to normal. But now, with her bare feet sliding in sticky-slick pools of blood as she looked over bashed and broken bodies, resolution still seemed quite far away. This mission was technically a success, with Kerr having been healed and now in good hands, but looking around the disheveled house, this hardly felt like a win.

Whatever Logan had planned for Nona, Cessily was positive she didn’t want to be around to witness it. She was still working out how to scrub the sight of her blood soaked and broken friend from her mind. Adding more carnage to her mental index wouldn’t generally be advised. At Kitty’s announcement to make like a baby and head out, Cess gave one more look to the others to make sure they didn’t need anymore assistance before she headed toward the wall they were being beckoned toward. Looking at the swath of wall beneath Kitty’s hand quizzically, her incomplete understanding of the scope of Shadowcat ‘s powers caused Cess to hesitate. This was some platform 9 and ¾ type shit. After a one of her teammates proceeded through without incident, Cessily cautiously followed, moving through the wall with no sensation of the physical barrier at all.

Wide silver eyes locked on the open door of the van just beyond the threshold, blood caked feet padding across the concrete before leading her through the door and into the back. Cess sat there silently, motionless, replaying everything that had happened since that door was first blown off its hinges and the proverbial shit hit the fan. Part of her wasn’t sure she was cut out for this hero business, but the other part had been integral in saving lives today. This entire ordeal was an exercise in proving to herself that there was more of a hero in that shiny metallic exterior than she’d given herself credit for. Looking from Arsenic to Cypher, Cessily gave them a comforting nod that all was well on the other side of that wall. This nightmare was nearly over.

Gert kind of wanted to kick James again.

Thankfully Logan spoke before she could introduce her boot to his body again, small feet scraping against the ground as she listened to what the lead of her team said, "Just so you know, they treat the perverts the worst in prison, don't let us catch you." She had every faith in Cypher that if something was going on, he'd find them and he'd make them pay to the fullest extent. One last look and she was hopping into the van after Indy, scratching the pup again before taking the small ride over around the building with Doug.

"Hey, leave the keys in the ignition and hop in the back. I can drive once we leave that way you can sit in the back with Kerr. She could use your support, and no way you are in any shape to drive us out of here if Ash is still working on her while we are leaving." Reaching out Gert gave Doug's shoulder a squeeze before hopping back out of the van and heading to the side of the building.

As Gentle commanded, Old Lace headed straight for where Gert was, easily passing through the wall that Shadowcat had phased. The purple haired girl stopping suddenly at the sight of her blood covered companion, "Oh holy fuck, that had better not be your blood." Muttering to the dino as they both stood there waiting for those coming out to help them into the van, "Ohhhh God you guys." Her eyes instantly watered as she took in the sight before her, there were blood and guts on them, things and people had been just destroyed. Bile rose in her throat as she watched everyone come out, everyone looking like they'd gotten the wrong end of a shitty situation.

She wanted to cry, but managed to hold herself together as someone had to drive the getaway car, "Put Kerr in the back there next to Doug, then put Kaylee on the other side so that Ash can reach them both easy just in case." Taking a breath she just watched everyone shuffle in, eyes flicking up to Nez as he came out much larger then he was when he went in. "Thank you" She whispered to him, he didn't need to come as Kerr was her best friend, but the fact that he did meant a great deal to the empath. Yet her gaze fell to Kitty when the other girl came out last, something about the look on her face and the strange lilt to her feelings had Gert just nodding gently, "Come on, we can wait for Logan in the car."

Looking both ways to make sure that there was not anyone creeping up behind them to get into the car, Gert took over the place behind the wheel. She sat there for a long moment, eyes on the rearview mirror as they all sat waiting for Wolverine, Old Lace chirping and muttering as she tried to crawl into Nez's lap but also strain to lean over the seats so that she could touch Backup at the same time. There was just no helping it, Gert wanted to fuss over everyone so badly. Wanted to feel their pulses under her fingertips so she'd know that their hearts still beat, yet instead of doing any of that she was sitting there with her hands clenched on the steering wheel, knuckles slowly going white as they waited.

It was only about six years before Logan finally came out, "Hang on tight you guys, we are taking a shortcut." Slamming the van into gear once everyone was settled, the former runaway just put the pedal to the metal and took a side street to get back to their destination. "No street cameras this way."

As Gentle dropped Nona, Logan waited until the kids were out, frowning at the look Shadowcat gave him. As Mercury and Honeybear got Backup and Mistral out of the building to the waiting van that Cypher and Arsenic had waiting, Logan slowly twisted his neck and let the vertebrae pop as Nona ranted.

Blinking as she finished and the others left, Logan waited a few seconds and seemed to come to himself with a start. "Oh. You're done. Sorry," Logan said. "Zoned out. Heard bullshit like various tin pot dictators, terrorists, human slavers, and every other piece of shit claims." Grabbing her roughly by the front of the neck with one hand and lifting her straight up, he walked deeper into the kitchen, waiting by the stove.

It wasn't quite time, so Logan unceremoniously dropped her to the floor, standing between her and the exits. With the kids being gone, he then listened to the feral side of himself a little bit, and gave it a few extra feet of chain.

Feral side. A quaint way to refer to the monster he used to be.

The sort of thing that had killed men. Women. Children. And not batted an eye. brushed them aside as the cost of doing business. As acceptable breakage. Collateral damage. Sacrifices for a nebulous 'greater good' which didn't exist in the realm of politics and nations.

While he might refer to it as 'monster' or 'feral side', he knew that beserker was simply him. Devoid of conscious. Devoid of mercy.

The part of him that used to regard Sabretooth as a trusted ally.

It whispered about how easy it would be to kill Nona. Ways to set it up as a suicide. Ways to make her vanish. Ways to stretch it out. Tortures that would leave her nothing but a broken mind trapped within her body.

But he wasn't giving that darkness that much free reign.

As the kettle started to slightly whistle, Logan slowly said "What I am about to do is send a message. To you. To anyone else who wants to try this. This work is not what my coworkers do. Not want the kids do." Ice cold eyes looked at Nona with all the empathy a wolf had for a rabbit as Wolverine said "You are going to think what is about to happen is bad. And for you.... it might be. But as bad as you think it is, as horrible as you think I am with the extents I will go to protect what I hold dear....." A small tsk noise came from the Canadaian as he leaned down and delicately touched Nona's hair, a slow an intimate move that most would associate with a lover, but made menacing by the fact his eyes were more bleak than an Arctic wasteland and with just as much mercy.

Leaning close, he whispered viciously in her ear "This is only skimming the surface of that well of deep, dark shit. You cannot possibly fathom how deep and vile and cruel that well runs. Be an idiot, attack your daughter or the school again, and you will LEARN. This little cutesy abduction and drugging, this pathetic amateur hour shit.... You will see first hand how to actually do it."

Moving his head back, Logan bared his teeth and said "But first. Let's disarm you." Grabbing her hair and neck, he yanked her whole body weight up suddenly and slammed one side of her face into the glowing burner.

For the first second or two, there was only shock as the scent of burning flesh and air started to waft through the air, faintly smelling like bacon as some of the fatty tissues burned. Then the scream echoed, sounding like a soul consigned to the lowest level of hell. Nona thrashed and twisted, but while Logan was short, he was a stout son of a bitch. And this was far from his first time doing something like this.

"You should be happy," he said conversationally. "There is a steady power supply. So maybe ten, twenty seconds instead of several minutes." Grinding that side of her face into the burner, he purred out loud in a voice laced with mocking "And what a lucky little girl you are."

Giving it a good fifteen seconds, he then yanked her off the burner and hurled her to the ground, grabbing Nona's face and examining his work. "Good," Logan said. "Nice and deep. No more seducing people to help you to get muscle." Giving the burn a light slap, Logan happily said "Recover. Be a dumb ass. Come back for round two. We'll skip this little slap and tickle stuff and go straight for the really bad things."

Leaving her in the wrecked home, Logan walked back to the van and climbed in, sitting in the back and staring straight ahead at nothing. Taking a deep breath as it started moving, those ice cold eyes looked at everything and not a damned thing all at once.

But as they started moving, degree by degree they started to warm. Chewing on a cigar as he wasn't going to light one up in the enclosed van, he thought to himself Control. I control the monster. It doesn't control me. Just sometimes it is needed.

Once Backup was stable, next came Mistral. He looked her over first, and while he was glad to see one exit wound... "Aw shit. Think there's still a bullet in your leg. I can't heal bullets outta people." He applied a generous helping of mustard-turned-glowing-blue-healing-salve to her injured shoulder, though Kaylee would find that the healing was not a comfortable experience. The major difference between Martyr's healing and Ash's method was pain, and speed. Ash's healing fixed her in a matter of seconds once enough was applied, but it was not a comfortable experience. Nerve endings and muscle regrowing fast enough she could almost feel them, meant it hurt about as much getting healed as it did getting the injury in the first place. And the fact that she could feel the pressure of a bullet intruding in her now-half-healed thigh was probably uncomfortable either. "That'll hold you, you'll need surgery when we get back, but I'll fix ya back up when that's done."

With that, Ash grabbed the lone unopened bottle of beer from the fridge and shoved it in his pocket - ammo for the ride home. He then picked Kerr up in a bridal carry and headed out to their awaiting getaway ride, moving slow enough for Kaylee to lean on him since she was probably going to have a limp for the moment. Once they were all in the car, he gave a brief, confident nod to Cypher. "Don't worry, she's good. We good." He then looked aside to Kaylee. "She's got a pulse, she's breathing, and my goop helps with blood loss enough that she'll be all better soon no matter how bad she's had it. But Idunno how much blood went down her lungs... you can do air stuff, right? Think you can make sure she's getting enough of it while we're driving? Just wanna be sure."

And that's all Ash really cared about right now. His friends were safe. He crammed his bigass self down onto the floor of the van during the ride home, so that Doug and Kaylee could sit on either side of Kerr. All he needed to be was within arm's reach. And speaking of arms, it was only now that he realized the adrenaline was wearing off, and his whole right bicep was just COVERED in blood. "Sonuva..." He grumbled, wrestling his jacket off, and then popping the cap on the beer bottle. He converted some of it into glowing blue honey, then slapped a generous amount of it over the gash across his shoulder, covering it like a styptic. On him, however, it didn't absorb - just remained covering the wound like a big glowing blue bandaid.

And with that matter settled... "Everyone else good? Got more healin' to go around." He spent the rest of the drive emptying out that bottle of beer, applying a bit of healing to anyone else who needed it... and then finishing the bottle himself. "Sweet jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick these biker fucks drink shitty beer." He muttered... though he still drank it. But it was something that had to be said. If only to make a joke to lighten the mood and let people know everything was going to be alright.

Everyone leapt into action and thankfully they knew to get Ash right to Kerr's side. She would be okay. She had to be. The bear kid's goop could heal anything, couldn't it? A sliced throat was nothing for the X-Men. She hoped. And prayed.

Luckily for her Mercury headed her way and helped prop her up. "I'll be okay. Probably." She grimaced. "Nothing vital's hit." And since the blood wasn't spraying out of her like a geyser she figured it wasn't arterial. Honeybear could fix her up next. "Good job out there." The room might be spinning a little, but it was important to give out praise where it was due. For a new kid Cessily had acquitted herself very well.

She watched Gentle and Wolverine threaten Nona and Nona's own claims with detachment. Nona deserved everything Logan was going to dole out. She wasn't about to try to stop him. Even if she wasn't gushing blood. She didn't get paid enough for that. Also the world would be better off if Nona became a stain on a floor somewhere.

Shadowcat and Cessily helped her into the kitchen which was half hobbling, half being dragged. Embarrassing.

"No worries," she told Ash as he looked her over. "It'll be a souvenir." She gritted her teeth as he knitted her shoulder back together. Ah well, she didn't really need both legs working right now anyway. She nodded at Ash's assessment. "Get her loaded up and I'll take over." She said that with a lot more confidence than she felt. Sure, Beast had been teaching her combat medicine in preparation for if this ever happened, but she was way more at home with babies than trauma.

She let Cessily help her back to the van, giving ajaunty, little wave to Nona and Logan with her good hand. "Don't make me shoot you next," she said. If Logan left anything for anyone to shoot. It was all bravado at that point, because if for some reason Logan decided not to kill her too, Kaylee would rather the bitch remember her that way in case she came back.

She had more important things to worry about now, so face set to hide the pain and worries about if she actually knew what she was doing she clambered into her spot beside Kerr, bag already in place. She clipped a pulse oximeter to Kerr's finger and the readings were less than reassuring. Sure, she had a pulse, but if she didn't get her airway back under control it wasn't going to do her any good. "Get the oxygen ready, mask to the tank," she told Cessily and Nez as she pressed a stethoscope to Kerr's chest quickly. Her thoughts were going a mile a minute, everything seemed slowed down around her, but at the same moment every second that went by was a second wasted. The blood loss wasn't making thinking easier, but at this point inaction was probably worse than doing something wrong. Or at least that's what she told herself as she fumbled in the bag. Well she and Beast had been working on chest tubes the other day. Intubations too, but since Kerr was still breathing she wasn't about to try that.

She started barking out orders. "If any of y'all know how to start an IV get me one." It was too ingrained in her to assess and get access to ignore that, even if Ash had dealt with the dehydration and malnutrition. A little fluid never hurt anybody. "Hold this," she thrust the chest tube kit at whoever was closest. "Don't touch anything." Sterility was going to be a problem, but frankly this whole thing was a problem. "Hold her arm up over her head." She cut her way through the dress to get to the side of Kerr's chest where it sounded like most of the problem was. She thought. They should have brought an actual doctor. She wiped her own excess blood off on her pants and went for the sterile gloves, she should have washed her hands, well, someone else could worry about infection later, cleaned the area in one brush that probably wasn't good enough, barely swiped lidocaine down, and went for the scalpel, fingers measuring for the right intercostal space as she went. She took a breath and sent up a prayer that she not only didn't screw this up but that Kerr stayed alive and made the cut, shoving the chest tube in place. She had a moment of internal panic when it wouldn't go where she wanted it, but after some wiggling it slid into place. Since there wasn't a fountain of blood erupting and since there was blood running into tube she was going to assume it was in the right place even as she went for the stethoscope again to try a rudimentary placement check. She was a little iffy on the whole suturing it into place but she did the best she could before adding a pressure dressing and sitting back to survey what she needed to do next.

"Kerr? Can you hear me?" she put a hand on the girl's shoulder, running eyes over her as she did. She was zonked out of it, only Kaylee didn't know with what. Of course since she had just jammed a chest tube in in the back of a moving vehicle it wasn't like anything else she did was going to be much more drastic so really she ought to just keep going. "Damn it Doug this would be going so much better if she was just having a baby." Like it was his fault his girlfriend had gotten kidnapped and tortured instead of pregnant.

It made sense in her slightly loopy mind anyway. Whether it was the blood loss or the fact she had just shoved a tube in her friend's chest was hard to say.

Nezhno knew what was coming. He could feel it starting to happen, though he resisted as much as he possibly could until everyone was safe back at the van. Glancing down at Gert, Nezhno smiled as only Nezhno could do. Even at over 8 feet tall it was still the same gentle demeanor as she whispered her thank you. "Anytime." Putting a reassuring thumb on her shoulder since the whole hand would not fit. Doing what he could to hide the worry that was starting to creep into his thoughts.

Shrinking back down to normal size, or rather the new normal since he never returned fully to his original height and weight. Nezhno gripped the side of the van and through sheer force of will, pulled himself into one of the seats. Positioning himself so Ash could get to the surface wound. Once again happy for the invention of unstable molecules and how they prevent him from ending up naked.

Nezhno let his eyes trail over those gathering in the van. Sleepily watching as Ash worked before looking out and onto Nona's house of debauchery. Nezhno was not for sure if Nona would survive the encounter with Logan. Half of him wanted her not to survive it. The other half did not wish that upon anyone and hoped that she would just learn her lesson and be done with it. Though he had a sneaky suspicion that this was not the last time they would encounter at least this biker gang. The thought brought a small shake to Nezhno's head as his eye lids got heavier and heavier.

The danger was real, that was for sure. People would be hurt. Old wounds re-opened again and again, but never the less. They trained for this every day. They worked as a team and not a chaotic band of thugs and that would make all the difference in the world. It always had and always would. So let them come. The New Mutants and X-men ran dozens deep. The long arm of the outlaw may reach New York, but it would break once it got their. These bikers haven't seen nothing yet.

His musings would have continued, but the drawback to his mutation caught up to him, and Nezhno slipped off to sleep. He was fine and not in any danger. (this time) Though he would sleep for a day or two only to wake up a few pants sized bigger and taller. Several pounds heavier and stronger. His muscles tighter and his flexibility needing to be redone. Every time it was like starting out from the beginning. Though he did not mind really, he was a work out aholic anyway.

Just the other side of the wall was a whole different story. With the sun peeking over the mountains and birdsongs lilting through the air, it told a tale of life, not the one of death they’d written inside. But their exit wasn’t yet an escape, not when they wore bloody reminders of their violent deeds and infected the van with that smell.

Gert’s gentle words were gladly received. That tone was a far cry from the snippy spat they’d had at the beginning of this. The days after that had been better, more cooperative and understanding, but Kitty knew she still owed the girl a formal apology. Now that Kerr was safe, there was time. For now, she gave just a tired nod of agreement and climbed on in.

The sight inside wasn’t any less grim. Their victory had come at a steep cost, so there was no celebration. It would be a few days, a few showers, and a few thousand miles before those moods would start to improve.

It was hard to do anything but watch that emergency surgery with bated breath, but this was an area where Kitty couldn’t help. She could phase that bullet out of Kaylee once things was stable (or rather, phase Kaylee out from around the bullet), but she couldn’t separate Kerr from her own blood and wouldn’t have tried.

So for now, she just watched. She watched Doug reunited with his love and all the complex emotion born in his expressions. She watched as Ash passed out miracles (and grabbed a hit for herself) before he used the alcohol to heal his mood instead. She watched Nez with concern as his powers caught up with him, lulling him to sleep.

But there was one person in the van with nothing but her thoughts to occupy her, and that was a danger in itself. Kitty rested a few fingers lightly on Mercury’s wrist to get the girl’s attention. “It’s okay to be upset. I am, too.” Her tone was soft, but her words carried enough that anyone who needed to hear them could. “What happened in there shouldn’t have had to. But those people killed one of their own and tried to kill two of ours. Nothing happened to them that they hadn’t already done to someone else.” It was nothing to be proud of, though, and the fact that it wasn’t sitting well with any of them was good.

“The important part, though,” she continued, “is that we saved an innocent girl. Our friend is coming home because you were here, because you helped. Don’t forget that.” Every one have them had played their part in Kerr’s safety, and that, that was something worthy of their pride.

As their final member arrived to the van, Kitty scooched in as far as she could; with seven people, two giants, a dino, and an active surgery, room was clearly tight. But as soon as Logan was in, they were officially headed home.

It was there in his eyes, though. Kitty had seen it enough to recognize the beast he kept caged within. It worried her. It always did. Once again, Logan shouldered the darkest of their needs to keep the rest of them clean, and as much as he claimed otherwise, she knew he didn’t like himself for it more than any of the rest of them. But again, that all went unsaid. It didn’t need to be, especially not in front of everyone else in the van, and as the moments ticked on and his gaze relaxed, so did she.

After a minute or two, though, she caught his gaze and asked a single question: “Is she alive?” The details of what had been done to Nona didn’t need to be shared. If they did, no one would have retreated to the van.

But Kitty knew from experience that a simple yes or no -- either way -- would be a lot easier to live with than the unknown.

Cessily had been preoccupied, eyes off somewhere on the back of a headrest as she replayed from start to finish everything that had happened since they pulled up in the van. She kept getting stuck at certain parts, like whether or not the few guys she’d bashed would be okay or if they’d have permanent damage from the hits. Whether or not leaving them there, broken and shattered and bleeding all over the damn place, would mean their death. Had she killed someone tonight? There was no way to know for sure, since there was no way in hell she was going back in there or sticking around to investigate the aftermath. But the possibility of it had Cessily’s mind in a tizzy. She wasn’t a killer… hell a few weeks ago she was just another high school cheerleader. And though a part of her wanted to regret ever agreeing to come here, the truth was that Kerr was safe and stable in the van because of what they’d done.

Soon they’d be back home, and this insane nightmare would be over. This was what school counselors were for, right?

The sound of the rest of her team piling into the van was dulled and muted by Cess’s own musings, so much so that she didn’t really snap back to reality until she felt a hand on her wrist. Jumping slightly at the touch, her concerned expression softened slightly at the friendly face of Shadowcat. Silver eyes never left the X-Man as she shared what Cess needed to hear, finding some solace in hearing them from a place other than between her own ears. Brushing a few strands of her slightly disheveled hair from her eyes, the young mutant nodded in silent understanding. She considered the words for a few moments silently before offering the best she could come up with during this much needed moment of decompression.

“Thank you, Kitty,” she managed, her voice small and soft in the corner of the van. She glanced over to Backup, under the watchful and capable care of Mistral and Honeybear. The phasing phenom was right… They’d done something good tonight, among the carnage and death that made that miserable house stink to high heaven. Kerr was alive because of their actions tonight, innocence spared while the wicked suffered their consequences. Floating along in the abstract chasm that is good versus evil, Cess attempted to anchor herself to that logic. Doing her best to turn her disturbed, distant gaze into a mirror of Kitty’s supportive expression, Cess did attempted to put on her big girl pants and keep her shit together during this ride. “I’m okay,” she assured her concerned friend. She definitely would be talking to someone when she got home, and hopefully Kitty would be one of those people. Cess needed to relay everything going on in her head after this whole ordeal with someone she really trusted, someone who was actually there.

With a weak smile of reassurance, she turned back toward the window and pressed her forehead against the pane, closing her eyes for a moment while Arsenic deftly maneuvered the van through the streets. The break from the stimuli of a van full of exhausted and worried faces was needed in a moment like this. With a little too much to process and hardly enough skills in her toolbox to adequately do so, Cess settled on a goal of stillness for both her body and her mind. Soon they’d be back home, and the real healing could begin for everyone.
