Does First Class originator count?
People will remember the older Scott as distant, cold, authoritarian. Those who liked him, who had known him for years could look around it- they knew he was the way he was because he felt like he had to be. Better not to form too many emotional connections lest he lose the people he cared about the most. When his wife, the only woman he had ever loved, was brutally murdered Scott lost the very last shred of anything good that his friends would remember him for. He became angry, bitter and a drunk. He was lost and for a long time it looked as though there would be no drawing him back to himself.
These days things are different. Having been deaged back to his teenage self Scottie has returned to the student that the First Class remember him as. Certain changes in his environment have encouraged a cheekier side in him; there are more students at the school than back in his day and they provide him with a social challenge that has really brought him out of his shell. At his core though Scottie is a shy, polite and reserved young man. He’s not great at expressing how he feels, particularly if he is allowed time to consider how doing so might affect a situation. He’s more at home just hanging out in his car listening to music than he is in crowds. The way that he overcomes his shyness typically is with humour or, in training situations with a tough and somewhat bossy approach.
Although he feels as though he is railing against the image of Scott the X-Leader by choosing not to re-age, Scottie cannot get away from his natural ability to lead. Put him in a situation that needs a command and he’ll step right up to that role without even thinking about it or even actively volunteering. When he takes on leadership there is an active change in Scottie’s personality- he leaves the humour at the door, is tough and controlled and will push his teammates hard. “Failure” does not exist in his vocabulary and Scott will agonise over every single mistake he or his team make, putting the blame for others’ errors on himself for poor leadership. He is fiercely loyal and will never hesitate to sacrifice himself or his own personal happiness for Xavier’s cause; something which he believes in completely.
Intelligent and a budding expert tactician, Scott approaches his everyday life with the precision of a military commander. He thrives off of routine, is highly organised and uncomfortable with surprises. Whilst new friends are helping him to appreciate the positives in spontaneity he still struggles a little. He’s a neat freak too; his room is spotless- at least his half of it anyway, with books, school work and objects systematically organised.Likes-
- Music- 90s indie and grunge specifically. Blur, The Pixies, Longpigs, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Radiohead. The list is pretty long. He doesn’t really buy into the stuff kids are listening to these days.
- His car- Scottie is pretty psyched he owns an Impala. He doesn’t like much about his older self but that car is his pride and joy. He spends a lot of time just sitting in it.
- Cheese fries from Harry’s. They are life.
- Training- Scottie loves Danger Room sessions, powers practise, combat training. He’s just really into this whole X-Men vibe. Guaranteed he is 100% the most excited person in the room during PT.
- Class. Scottie really enjoys school and he’s an A+ student to boot. He’s no genius but he is intelligent and definitely applies himself.
- Stop signs hidden in trees
- Tobacco smoke. Smoking in general. Just no. It’s vile.
- Oneupmanship - just be a team okay, nobody’s better than anybody.
- Dancing With the Stars - reality type talent show crap in general.
- Impoliteness- manners are free.
- Caring - Scottie really gives a shit about people, like a lot. If you need it, he’s got your back.
- Disciplined - Owing to concentrated training in his early teenage years, Scottie is a particularly disciplined young man, at least when it comes to team activities.
- Courage - He’s pretty brave most of the time. Again, it’s pretty much owing to his training, something that almost wholly defines who Scottie is.
- Uptight - He doesn’t always know when to relax, this is something that he’s working on.
- Obsessive - Scottie has a habit of obsessing over even the smallest detail, it can lead to him becoming preoccupied with unimportant matters instead of focusing on the bigger picture.
- Stubborn - Once he’s set on something it can be pretty difficult to change Scott’s mind, particularly if your suggestion irritates him. Trying to get him to do something contrary to his current thinking might land you on your butt in the snow.
Scott has the ability to project a powerful beam of concussive ruby-coloured energy from his eyes. Cyclop’s power comes from ambient radiation, which his body absorbs and metabolises into concussive blasts that are projected from his eyes. The rest of Cyclops’ body appears to be protected from the energies with the particles being constantly shunted back to their point of origin as they collide with the rest of his body. Even the thin membrane of his eyelids is enough to block the emission of these energies meaning that all he is required to do to shut off a blast (should he be without his ruby-quartz lenses) is close his eyes. As radiation is present in almost all things on earth, Cyclops’s power supply is almost infinite.
The width of these blasts is adjusted by the same function that allows his eyes to focus. As his eyes focus in and out, the size of the psionic opening through which the energy escapes changes. The narrowest beam that Scott has managed to produce is about the width of a pencil, which at a distance of about 4ft has an approximate force of 2lbs per square inch. His broadest beam reaches roughly 90 feet across (at its widest end), at a distance of 50ft and has an approximate force of 500 lbs per square inch. His beam’s effective range is about 1000 ft, at which point a 1 inch beam has spread out to 5ft square and has a pressure of 0.7lbs per square inch.
The maximum force of Cyclops’s beam is currently unknown though it has been theorised that he possesses enough power to ‘punch through mountains’ although this has never been tested for obvious reasons and could well be hyperbole. The maximum force that Scott is comfortable using is powerful enough to tip over a 5,000 gallon tank at a distance of 20ft or puncture a 1 inch carbon steel plate at a distance of 2ft. The energy output of the beams when measured has been shown to be in excess of 2 gigawatts; which is more than a large nuclear reactor.Limits:
Due to a childhood head trauma, Scott is unable to turn his off his optic blasts. As such without the protection of his ruby-quartz glasses, Scott is unable to open his eyes without destroying whatever he looks at. As a result of the ever present energy within his field of view, he also has partial colour blindness seeing the world in shades of red.
Whilst his powers are almost infinite, there is the possibility that, should he be placed in an environment completely devoid of radioactive energy, and all stored energy was used up, he would temporarily lose his powers until such a time as he body could absorb more. He also requires a short period between blasts to recharge, less than a couple of seconds, but long enough for an enemy to strike whilst he is down and offensive weapon.Power Name:
Superhuman Spatial AwarenessDescription:
Scott possesses an uncanny, superhuman sense of observation which he uses to calculate the angles between objects in a given space. He uses the ability to ricochet or reflect his optic blasts off of one surface and into another as he chooses. Limits:
Summers family resistanceDescription:
All mutant members of the Summers family have a natural immunity to one another’s energy related powers. Limits:
Scottie’s own powers are negated by his brothers energy fields meaning that he must resort to other means if he ever comes into violent conflict with Havok or Vulcan. Additionally, he is only immune to Vulcan’s energy related powers.Skills & Abilities-
Do ‘good at Chem’ and ‘has his driver’s license’ count? He’s feeling a little lacking in the skills department since the First Class went and grew up without him. That being said he has been training with Xavier for six years (to his memory) and much of this has been very focused and concentrated what with there being only five students at the time. As such he is particularly skilled in coordinated team combat and in leading in such scenarios.
The first thing that people note about Scottie is his height. Not necessarily because he is so tall (because let’s face it, at Xavier’s being over 6 feet is not unusual) but because he is so slim with it. Whilst not unhealthily small for his age, such a low weight gives him an awkward appearance as though he doesn't quite fit into his body. He’s working on it and will bulk out with age but for now he’s just a gangly teenager. He has a mess of dark brown hair that never seems to look tidy no matter how long he spends on it and his eyes behind the red energy of his laser blasts are blue, not that anyone has seen them since his power manifested. He’s pale with a smattering of freckles across his nose that spread out across his cheeks in the heat of the summer, with a strong jaw, and a wide smile.
Style wise he really is just a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy and can pretty much always be seen wearing his trusty leather jacket (when it isn’t on long term loan to a certain someone) and when he’s without that, he lives in varsity style jackets. He’s not beyond dressing up when the occasion calls for it but he’d really rather not and thankfully there’s very rarely any reason for it. Of course there are the ever present ruby quartz lenses that Scottie has to
wear- they’re pretty much his defining feature and although they may go unnoticed in passing it becomes clear to those who do not know him when he does not remove them indoors that there’s something up there. Most who are not aware of who Cyclops is (or that the deaged Scottie is, in fact, the very same Cyke that people know and uh love?) like assume that he is visually impaired or just one of those assholes who refuses to remove his shades.Gear-
Scottie’s most important gear are his ruby quartz lenses. He has two pairs of aviators that he wears outside of combat situations and then of course there’s his visor.Additional Information-
Scottie’s personal timeline was rewound meaning that to his memory the year is roughly 1999. He has no personal knowledge of the time that passed between 2000 and 2017 and what he has learned about events since then has been gleaned from books and television. Smartphones and tablets were not in existence, there was no such thing as Netflix, Google or social media. USB flash drives were not in common use, TiVo, in car GPS, the iPod and WiFi are all technological developments that Scottie has had to become very quickly acquainted with. Life since January 21st 2017 has been a wild ride and although he won’t admit it to anyone, he’s more than a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things he has to catch up on.

Scott Summers is the eldest son of Major Christopher Summers, a test pilot in the US Air Force, and his wife Katherine Ann. His younger brother Alex is known today as the mutant Havok (unbeknown to Scott). When he was just a boy, he lost both of his parents in a plane accident when flying home from a vacation in his father’s vintage private plane. Their mother pushed Scott and Alex out of the plane door with the only available parachute. When the parachute failed to open, the stress of the brothers’ situation caused Scott’s mutation to manifest and, using his optic blasts for the first time, he was able to slow their descent.
Having sustained a head injuring on landing, the part of Scott’s brain that would have enabled him to control his optic blasts was damaged, forcing him to keep his eyes closed at all times. He was laid up in hospital for months following the accident, for the first month existing in a coma as a result of the trauma. When he awoke, he was to discover that Alex had already been adopted, removed for his own safety from a mutant brother with such a terrifying destructive power.
Upon recovering, he was place in the care of the State Home for Foundlings, an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska. There he was subjected to bullying and ridicule by the residents who viewed him as an outsider and potential cause of harm. Ashamed of his inability to control his mutation, and out of fear of harming innocent people, Scott became isolated and withdrawn. He gradually came to accept that he would spend the rest of his life with his eyes bandaged shut, knowing that he would never open them again.
And then one day, out of the silence, a voice came to him.
The manifestation of Scott’s powers some months previously had attracted the attention of Professor Charles Xavier who removed the now twelve year old boy from the orphanage and into his care. Xavier manipulated the memories of the staff at the hospital and the State Home for Foundlings so that they would not remember he was a mutant; a fact he felt that the world was not yet ready to know. After some experimentation and a little trial and error, Xavier and his contacts in various scientific fields discovered that a synthesised ruby quartz provided protection against Scott’s devastating optic blasts. Almost a year after he had been forced to close his eyes on the world, Scott was able to see again albeit in varying shades of red.
Scott became a member of Xavier’s first class of X-Men and with them he was trained in the use of his powers, given the codename, Cyclops and appointed leader of the team. Whilst he was a skilled tactician, Scott’s social skills were lacking a fact for which he tried to overcompensate, at first causing friction between the teenagers until he finally settled into his role. The First Class grew up together learning life’s lessons alongside side one another whilst simultaneously learning to navigate the perils of living with and control potentially dangerous mutations.
In march of 2001, Magneto revealed the existence of mutants to the world in a targeted attack against Cape Citadel Missile Base in Florida. It was a devastating blow for mutant kind, which saw them portrayed as violent weapons of mass destruction; an almost unstoppable threat to humanity. Moved into action by the destruction, Cyclops and his teammates Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl and Iceman were sent into battle. Scott was able to lead his team to defeat the Master of Magnestism, but the damage had been done, mutant kind had been outed to a captive audience, who had heard Magneto’s message loud and clear; we’re here, and there’s nothing you can do to stop us.
The battle against Magneto was a defining moment for Scott, causing him to really consider his dedication to Xavier for the first time since he had arrived at the mansion. He found in himself a previously undiscovered passion for furthering the mutant cause and fostering positive relationships with humankind. Furthermore, he now understood the importance of ensuring that other young mutants across the world were afforded the same opportunities that had come to him. He spent the following years helping to train more and more students as they enrolled at the school.
In 2008, Scott met and fell in love with a young telepath, Madelyne Pryor. Their whirlwind romance that saw the young man focusing on something other than his work for the first time in a number of years. In December of 2011, after three years of dating, Scott proposed and when she said yes it was with only a slightly heavy heart that he tendered his resignation from the school in favour of a quiet life with his new wife. The pair moved to Alaska where he was now the sole owner of the Summers family estate. For a number of years he held a job as a charter pilot, returning to the school on occasion to visit friends and keep in touch with the students. He was, at last, completely happy.
In April 2015, Scott returned home from a chartered trip to find that his home had been destroyed, his wife’s body found several hundreds of yards away from the destruction. He did what he could to revive her, but she had been long dead before he had arrived. In the distance he spotted the familiar shadow of a man, suspended in the air, cape floating behind him, his helmet protecting him from telepathic intrusion. His wife’s murder had been Magneto’s doing and the knowledge broke Scott, it devastated him. Some fourteen years after the First Class had driven Magneto back, the Master of Magnetism had finally exacted his revenge, or so Scott believed. Unable to bear the pain of remaining in Anchorage, he sold off what he could of the family estate and returned to the school.
There, under the guise of returning to his teaching, Scott conducted his own investigation into Magneto’s whereabouts, operating out of his quarters. For the first year his attitude had changed completely; he was sullen, even more withdrawn than usual and his temper was quick. When he showed up to teach a class he was tough almost to the point of cruelty and when he wasn’t he was because he had disappeared, sometimes not returning for weeks on end. As far as he was concerned he was on a one man crusade against the man who was responsible for the death of his wife, and no one would stop him until he had reached his goal. Tracking down any lead that he could find on Magneto’s location, but Cyclops was always just a step behind. Defeated, he returned to the school in September 2016 but he was not to remain there for long.
His behaviour erratic, drinking heavy and attitude towards the young students so tough as to be almost frightening, Xavier ordered Scott away from the mansion. He was not to return until he had spent some time reflecting and learning to control his grief. Taking a couple of months out, Scott gained some new clarity regarding his wife’s devastating passing and, deeply sorry for taking out his pain on the people of Xavier’s, he returned to the school in the middle of November, with a heartfelt apology and a renewed sense of purpose. Some months later in January of 2017 whilst following leads on recent mutant outbursts in the city, Scott ran into a Kick enhanced Kerr MacKay. Her rage at his previous treatment of her drove the teen to rewind his personal timeline back seventeen years reducing Scott to his teenage self. He has no memory of the seventeen years that have passed since December 1999 or of the relationships and experiences that is older self had been through since then. Life has been something of an adjustment.
Nevertheless, when confronted with the opportunity to return to his older self by the Savage Land entity known as Mystra, Scottie chose to remain seventeen years old. The obvious disadvantages of losing the training and expertise gained in the decades that he lost to Kerr’s powers were not enough that he wished to return to the bitter and drunk man he had become.
